Equipment

Waitakere Ranges Regional Park is Auckland's largest regional park, 16,000 hectares of bush stretching from Muriwai Beach in the north to Whatipu in the south, known to Maori as Te Wao Nui o Tiriwa, the great forest of Tiriwa. A small playground near the Arataki Visitor Centre gives families a rest stop before or after exploring the wider park, rather than a destination in its own right.

Some of the most popular walks include… Lion Rock – a short but punchy climb above Piha beach, for nature lovers and bird watchers alike. Upper Huia Reservoir – 17 kilometres of trail complete with an abandoned mine, two dams, and nikau palms unique to New Zealand. Kitekite Falls – famed for its old kauri trunk at the start and 40 metre waterfall at the end. Mercer Bay – for amazing coastal views from the highest coastal slopes in Auckland. Whatipu Caves – where young people came to dance for nearly a century.

Breathtaking views and good trekking for beginners. Trails can be longer than you expect, so be mentally prepared. Overall an amazing experience.

This scenic forest trail winds through dense woodland. Mostly covered with small gravel, the path is shaded and relatively gentle in slope.

It’s wonderful place to relax and nice green environment. You can easily enjoy the calm and quiet nature and easily move out from the busy traffic in the city. Just 30 to 40 minutes drive from the Auckland city .

You can do a really quick out and back hike to a waterfall here. There is a boardwalk hike through jungle like Settings and then a pretty brisk uphill stair climb to get to the base of some pretty beautiful waterfalls. Make sure to do the footwashing protocol to save the forest.
