Warren Park

Warren Park spreads across 15 hectares of South Hornby between Oakley Crescent and Wilmers Road, big enough to carry five cricket ovals, a full set of soccer fields and an 18 hole disc golf course without ever feeling crowded. It is the home ground for Hornby United AFC and a magnet for local walkers and dog owners, but the playground and flying fox at its centre still make it a genuine family stop rather than just a sports complex.

Equipment

The play area includes a flying fox and playground equipment built for a range of age groups, backed up by a half court for pickup basketball. Just beyond it, the permanent 18 hole disc golf course runs through a mix of open ground and wooded sections, roughly half and half, giving beginners a proper introduction to the sport without the intimidation factor of a fully wooded layout.

Access and Inclusion

Warren Park has good wheelchair access throughout its grounds, with entry points from both Oakley Crescent and Wilmers Road and public toilets on site, making the two kilometre loop around the park's perimeter genuinely usable for wheelchair users, not just walkers and joggers. The disc golf course adds to that with cart friendly paths and is both dog friendly and stroller friendly, and playing costs nothing beyond bringing your own disc, notable for a sport that often charges elsewhere.

History and Cultural

The disc golf course is a relatively recent addition. Christchurch Disc Golf introduced it with a Have A Go Day on 26 September 2021, setting up temporary baskets across all 18 holes, lending discs to anyone who turned up and coaching newcomers through their first throws before the permanent course was installed. It has since become one of the club's regular courses, adding a low cost, drop in sport to a park that was already built around cricket and football.
