Waterfront Playground

Right on the waterfront in the heart of Whitianga, this playground has become one of the Coromandel Peninsula's most-visited family stops since it opened in mid-2019. Backed by harbour views and the gentle noise of boats at the nearby wharf, it anchors the Esplanade Reserve in a way that draws families back morning after morning during the summer holidays.

Whitianga is a Mercury Bay holiday town about two and a half hours south-east of Auckland. The Esplanade runs along the edge of the harbour, connecting the town wharf with the main shopping strip, and the playground sits right in this corridor. The foreshore walkway extends through to Carina Creek, and the town centre cafes, ice cream shops, and the Whitianga ferry to Ferry Landing are all within easy walking distance. Parking is available along the Esplanade, though it fills quickly on peak summer weekends when the town's population swells with visiting families.

Thames Coromandel District Council commissioned Boffa Miskell and Playground Creations to deliver the space, and the nautical theme is carried through with real care. The centrepiece of the sand zone is a large wooden boat fitted with a helm and telescope, designed as a nod to HMS Buffalo, a shipwreck that lies just 50 metres offshore in Buffalo Beach. Three age-graded play zones are laid out within the perimeter of a mini scooter track that loops the whole site, so children on scooters and bikes can circuit the playground independently while smaller kids play in the sand zone.

The main play zone packs in a generous spread of equipment: a large customised multi-play unit with platforms and a slide, a net climber, an in-ground trampoline, a supernova spinner, a seesaw, and multiple swing types. Water play features include troughs, dispensers, and a small water channel with gates, which are extremely popular with toddlers and younger children during warm weather. The combination of active and sensory play makes the site work well for mixed-age groups.

The playground is well suited to children from toddler age through to around ten or eleven. The water play and sand boat tend to dominate for the under-fives, while the net climber and in-ground trampoline draw the older primary-school crowd. The site is unfenced and sits close to the road and the harbour edge, so active supervision is important for young children, particularly near the water play channels and the scooter track perimeter.

Toilets are available in the Esplanade Reserve. The site is flat and accessible. Picnic tables are positioned to take in the harbour views. Shade is limited over the main play zone, which can make midday visits in summer uncomfortable; early morning and late afternoon are the better times on a hot day.

Since opening, the playground has received consistently strong feedback from locals and visiting families alike, and it is widely regarded as one of the standout destination playgrounds on the Coromandel.
