Why these ages?

Multi-play, junior slide, glider, infant-seat swings on artificial turf with shade sails, plus miniature railway on first Sundays. Beach is immediately adjacent - open water is right there and unfenced, meaningful risk for wandering toddlers. Skate park abuts too. Great for supervised primary-age kids and tweens (railway, skate).

Access notes

Description states artificial turf covers the ground throughout, the site is level on the foreshore, and off street parking is available directly on site. No accessible toilet or transfer piece is mentioned, so access stays just short of fully confirmed.

The playground at 1D McAlister Street combines a full range of children's play equipment with an adjoining skatepark, on a foreshore site immediately next to Whakatane's beach. A multi play structure with slide, swings with an infant seat, a glider, and a junior slide give younger children dedicated equipment, while the skatepark extends the site's reach to independent older children and teenagers.

What a great little railway. Definitely a place to go if they’re open the weekend you’re in the area. $2 a ride makes it really cheap too. So much fun to do!

Miniature steam railway in Whakatane. They open up on the first sunday of every month and have several different engines running to give rides which the kids will love - real steam, smoke and whistles. One ride is $2 but you can buy multi-ticket passes for a discount, tickets are cash only. They run every sunday during the school holidays. You are required to wear shoes on the train but they have a selection of used footwear you can put on if you are not wearing anything suitable.

Such a cute little thing to do on a Sunday morning! I’m 100% sure the kids will love it through and through! Because even big kids like myself do!! It was quite heartwarming to see a bunch of retired gents working hard together to keep this going and to bring joy to families and little ones. Thank you x ❤️

Sadly the facilities were not being used when we cycled past. But what a super spot for this sort of recreation. Well done Whakatane - we'll be back.

Great little area. Train rides are awesome and the kids love it! The new addition to the skatepark which is more suited to a younger age group is great as well. Really cool

Our little boy really enjoyed it. Attendants apologising for being short staffed but actually was no real wait and very reasonable price
