Wright Park

Wright Park is a quiet green pocket in Sunnybrook, Rotorua, where a small neighbourhood playground sits in the middle of an open lawn, with a stream gully and an unmown hillside behind it. Families come for the space as much as the equipment: the play area is well back from the road, there is a hill for kids to charge up, and water to explore.

Equipment

Rotorua Lakes Council lists slides, swings including a toddler swing, and pieces for climbing, balancing, hanging and spinning.¹ It is one compact set on a pad in the grass, so it suits under-fives and early primary ages for a short play rather than a whole morning. A big tree right beside the play pad throws some shade; the rest of the lawn is open to the sun.

The council notes the playground is away from the road, with a park bench for parents.¹ The play pad does not appear to be fenced, and neither the council listing nor aerial photos show toilets or a car park, so most people walk in from the surrounding streets.

Past the lawn the park turns wild, which is what regulars like about it: long grass on the slope to the north with a worn track through it, and a stream along the eastern edge with a path on the bank. One parent says their 9 and 10 year olds fly fish there in season, so keep little ones close near the water. Dog walkers use it too.

For a second stop, Phoebe Place Reserve and Hodgkins Street Reserve are both under a kilometre away.
