Adderstone Reserve

Adderstone Reserve in Fitzherbert has a nature play space built from logs and concrete pipes, added by the council's parks team in summer 2025 using reclaimed materials rather than manufactured playground equipment. It suits confident primary school age climbers best; toddlers will need close supervision given the uneven surfaces and lack of enclosed areas.

Equipment

The nature play space encourages climbing, balancing and open ended exploration rather than prescribed activities, sitting within a 6.8 hectare reserve of open grassy fields and a native bush gully with a small stream.

Access and Inclusion

The Turitea and Adderstone Walkways connect from the reserve, rated 3 out of 5 for difficulty with steep sections unsuitable for buggies or wheelchairs. Dogs are welcome on the flat grassed areas but must stay on a lead.

History and Cultural

In 2022 and 2023 the council consulted on rezoning part of the reserve for housing; following submissions it decided in April 2023 to retain the majority of the land, keeping the gully and walkway areas intact. The gully forms part of the city's Green Corridors network of native plantings connecting reserve corridors across Palmerston North.
