Why these ages?

Destination six-hectare park with dedicated under-fives zone that description says sits apart from taller equipment, easing supervision — clear distance mitigation. Under-fives area has smaller slides and water play; older kids get Amazon Tower slide, twin flying fox, Super Mega Swing, Helix/Red Spaceball climbing frames. Duck pond, water play features and adjacent redeveloped Motutawa Skatepark are real hazards for wandering toddlers, but the physical layout separates the zones.

Access notes

Description explicitly describes an accessible entrance for wheelchairs and pushchairs, accessible toilets, and off street parking, and reviews independently confirm play equipment designed for children with disabilities.

Few council owned green spaces in Wellington pack in as much as this six-hectare riverside park does: a large play area, a miniature railway, mini golf, paddle boats and an award-winning skate park beside the Hutt River in Avalon. Motutawa Avalon Park holds Green Flag Award recognition for 2025/26, and its skate park won Active Park/Sportsground of the Year at the 2025 Recreation Aotearoa Parks Awards.
