Cashmere Village Green

Cashmere Village Green is a sloping wedge of grass and big trees on the bend of Dyers Pass Road in Cashmere, Christchurch, with a single slide rather than a full playground. It suits a ten minute stop on the way up or down the hill, not a morning out.

Equipment

Christchurch City Council's asset register lists one piece of play equipment here: a slide.¹ Aerial imagery places it at the green's southern tip, in a small landscaped corner of paths, steps, rocks and planting under large trees that shade that end. There are no swings, climbing frames or toddler pieces, so it is best for a child who just wants a few runs down the slide while you stretch your legs.

Practical Info

Dyers Pass Road curves around the green's eastern edge, where the open grass meets the kerb, and another road runs past its southern tip. One visitor found it exposed and not very peaceful because of the traffic, though well looked after, so keep toddlers close. Another brings a dog for a run on the grass. The green sits by Cashmere Presbyterian Church and Macmillan Avenue; a 2011 library photo shows a toboggan on Dyers Pass Road right beside it during that year's snowstorm.² The church, walled in local basalt to a design by Cecil Wood and Richard Harman, had its first stage finished in 1929.³

For a proper play session, Holliss Reserve Playground is about 600 m away, with swings, a toddler area, toilets and a duck pond, and Remuera Reserve Playground, about 700 m away, adds swings with an infant seat.
