College Street Playground

College Street playground in Caversham was upgraded in 2022 as the first site funded under the Dunedin City Council Play Spaces Plan. The medium-sized playground on mixed artificial and bark softfall features a fort with slide and talking tubes, a balance beam, log scramble with toadstool stepping pods (made from recycled timber), a two-person basket swing, a toddler seat swing, a spinner, climbing bars, and a slide. The upgrade cost $135,000 and was designed primarily for children aged 5 to 9.

Access and Inclusion

On-street parking is available. The redesign included new pathways and seating, and the playground caters for standard play (swinging, balancing, sliding), specialised play (sound through talking tubes), and imaginative play. No specific wheelchair-accessible equipment was detailed in the upgrade documentation. Timber from the original playground was reused in the new design.

History and Cultural

The playground serves the Caversham community, a southern Dunedin suburb with a working-class history tied to early industrialisation in the valley. The 2022 upgrade was developed collaboratively with the Caversham Community Group 9012 and pupils from Carisbrook School, who provided feedback on their favourite play activities. The project was the first playground renewal under the council play spaces plan adopted in August 2021.

Managed by Dunedin City Council with a smokefree policy in place. On-street parking. Seating provided on site. The playground adjoins the Caversham Reserve.
