Tonga Park

Tonga Park's playground sits within a large multi sport reserve on Surrey Street in St Clair, Dunedin, with swings, a spider net climber, a slide and a half basketball court on artificial softfall close to the pitches. It's a solid stop for primary aged children who like to bounce between play equipment and pickup sport.

Equipment

The council's Tonga Park page lists toilets and a large reserve of four soccer fields, a junior soccer field, two grassed and two artificial cricket fields, and cricket practice nets around the play area. Swings including an infant swing, a spider net climbing structure and a slide make up the equipment itself, alongside the half basketball court for older kids.

History and Cultural

Tonga is Maori for south, a nod to the park's position at the southern edge of central Dunedin. Dunedin City Council archive photographs from around 1975 show children playing here with Macandrew Intermediate visible behind them, pointing to more than fifty years of use as a neighbourhood recreation space. The park has a long association with football through Caversham AFC, based here for decades.

Practical Info

Public and community use is free of charge, though commercial bookings are charged separately; sports bookings for rugby, football, league, touch, softball or cricket go through the relevant regional code rather than directly with the council. On street parking runs along Surrey Street, close to St Clair Beach.
