Coyle Park Playground

Coyle Park crowns a headland at Point Chevalier, wrapped in pohutukawa, harbour views and a rock shelf beach that appears at low tide, with a playground normally built around a flying fox, space net and rope climbing frame. The equipment is currently closed for a full rebuild, due back by mid November 2026, while the wider park and beach stay open.

Equipment

Auckland Council is rebuilding the playground's flying fox, space net, rope climbing frame, embankment slides, multi play structure and junior multi play structure with slide, swing set including an infant swing, spring surf boards and spring toys, plus the small ridable train track that has long been a drawcard for littlies. The rest of the near five hectare park, including a newer basketball court and open grass for a ball or a picnic rug, stays open while the work continues.

Access and Inclusion

The park entrance is accessible, with an accessible toilet block by the car park at the end of Point Chevalier Road. On street angle parking includes marked mobility parks, and a bus stop serves the entrance directly, handy while the playground itself is fenced off. Established trees around the grass offer a break from the sun once the equipment reopens.

History and Cultural

Mana whenua were involved throughout the 2023 build of the adjoining basketball court, providing the art design worked into the court entrance, blessing the site before construction and carrying out cultural monitoring as the build progressed. The court's asphalt surface was chosen partly because it is simple to patch, and sited more than 100 metres from housing to manage noise. The playground itself dates to before 2019, and Coyle Park's cliffs and rock shelf have long made Point Chevalier, known locally as the Chev, a fixture of Auckland's summer staycation guides.

Practical Info

On site you'll find a barbecue, an outdoor shower, a drinking fountain, public toilets, picnic tables and seating, all under Council's smokefree parks policy. The park backs onto the beach, so pack togs alongside the usual playground kit, even with the playground itself closed for renewal until mid November 2026.
