Derek Heather Park

Derek Heather Park on Grandview Road in Western Heights, Hamilton is a medium-sized neighbourhood reserve with a playground that skews toward school-age children, alongside two sports fields and a bike path that loops through to the changing rooms and car park. The park was established within the last five years.

Equipment

The playground sits on an artificial-grass surface and features timber climbing and balance equipment, a multi-play climbing structure with slides, balancing logs, swings including an infant swing and basket swing, and a spinner. A half basketball court rounds out the active play options. The infant and basket swings cover the youngest visitors, and the slide on the climbing structure suits young children with adult assistance. The bike path running through the park to the changing rooms and car park is an added draw for older children on wheels.

History and Cultural

The park takes its name from Derek Heather, who served Hamilton as both a doctor and a city councillor. The naming honours his contribution to the community in an area he represented.

Off-street parking is available at the reserve. There is no shade over play equipment or seating at midday in summer, though an established tree provides some shade for the picnic table. Picnic tables and seating are on site. Hamilton City Council's smokefree policy applies.
