HistoryFreyberg Pool, directly behind the beach and playground, was built between 1961 and 1963 to a modernist design by architect Jason Smith of King and Dawson, notable for its asymmetrical butterfly roof and extensive glazing. It is a Category 1 Historic Place, gave Wellington its first year round indoor swimming venue, and continues a public swimming tradition at this Oriental Parade site dating back to 1862.

CultureFreyberg Beach takes its name from Lord Bernard Freyberg, a national swimming champion, decorated war hero and the first New Zealand raised Governor-General, who trained as a young swimmer at Te Aro Baths on this same stretch of Oriental Parade. He died in mid-1963 as the pool named in his honour was nearing completion, making it an especially fitting memorial.

Great spot for families. The playground was good, and there was easy access to the picnic area and beach. Great toilet and change rooms for free. Excellent cafe on site.

Lovely play area and white sand beach in Oriental Bay in Wellington. Things to play on, sand to dig in and the sea to swim in. There are changing rooms available for those brave enough to take a dip (water can be quite cold most of the year). There is also plenty of space for those who just want to catch some rays. Extremely popular on a sunny day, so parking can be tricky. There are also a number of ice cream and gelato shops nearby if you want to indulge. Great place to be on a typical sunny Wellington day 😀

Fun from ages 1,5 to 8 2 slides. No swings or see saws but the location directly at the beach makes up for it. Toilets close and paid parking

Great place to bring the kids around for lil picnic with the great view, playground from toddler year 2-5. Near the beach, clean toilet with paid parking car near the pool.

A great place to stop & have our takeaway tea. Was a lovely , cool late winters day & the harbour was glass smooth. A popular place for families & we met the tree man !

Cool little play area for kids right next to the beach. Finding a parking slot can be quite difficult specially on weekends after 9am. Few cafes close by which is quite handy. Public changing rooms are also just next to the beach.

A small beach, with white sand, plenty of parking (you got to be lucky though), has changing rooms, there are plenty of café s and restaurants around. Excellent views.

Stunning little city beach popular with families of little ones. Clean sand and clean water. Views of the city and hills beyond. Lots of play apparatus. Changing rooms and loos nearby were clean. Ice cream shops nearby.

I've loved this place for years, as have the kids. On a lovely day (weather wise) it provides a great 30 - 45 min stop. Not a massive range of play won't equipment and some of it could do with a refresh. Combine with a play down by the rocks at the waters edge and a pale or swim.
