Waitangi Park

Waitangi Park's playground centres on an interactive water play area with pumps, channels and sprays, backed up by a climbing structure, swings, a roller slide, a sand pit, a bowl rocker and a solo spinner, small enough to feel like a proper play space rather than an afterthought beside the park's much larger concrete skate bowl. It sits within a six-hectare waterfront park in Te Aro that also holds basketball and pétanque courts, community gardens and cafe tables.

Equipment

The interactive water play area, with pumps, channels and sprays, is the centrepiece, and it pairs well with sand play and the bowl rocker for toddlers. Older children get a climbing structure, swings, a roller slide and a solo spinner. The wider park's skate bowl, regarded as one of the best in the country and home to the annual Bowlzilla competition, sits alongside, along with a half basketball court and a pétanque court.

Access and Inclusion

The park is flat throughout, so wheelchairs, strollers and mobility devices move easily between the playground, skate park, court and cafe without steps. Paths connect to the waterfront promenade near Courtenay Place.

History and Cultural

The park takes its name from the Waitangi Stream, used for centuries by Māori for food gathering, fresh water and launching waka before European reclamation piped it underground; through the twentieth century the site served in turn as a morgue, a bus depot and an incinerator. Landscape architect Megan Wraight's 2006 redevelopment daylighted the stream and rebuilt its wetland as the park's centrepiece, with carved pou and a waka area marking that history today.

Waitangi Park sits on Herd Street in Te Aro, bordered by Cable Street and Oriental Parade. Angle parking is available nearby, though most visitors arrive on foot, by bike or by bus. Public toilets and a drinking fountain sit close to the playground, and the adjacent cafe offers food and seating. Dogs must stay leashed, and the park hosts markets and events through the year.
