Gribblehirst Park

Gribblehirst Park's playground gives Sandringham a genuinely all-ages play space, anchored by a tower with two slide options and a flying fox that puts it a level above most neighbourhood playgrounds nearby.

Equipment

The playground carries a full age range: a swing set with an infant swing, a junior slide, a tower with both a tubular slide and a straight slide, a separate tubular slide, a basket swing, a rocker and a flying fox, plus a half basketball court and open grass alongside. The flying fox was a later addition, arriving during upgrades between 1998 and 2007 that modernised the original 1931 play area for a new generation of kids.

Access and Inclusion

Off-street angle parking sits close to the playground, and level paths connect it to the park's other facilities, including the community hub and rose garden, so a playground visit can easily extend into a longer outing. The basket swing gives mixed-age groups a way to swing together rather than splitting up between separate equipment.

History and Cultural

The park was once Cabbage Tree Swamp, a lava-flow wetland that Tāmaki Māori called Ngā Anawai for the water-filled caves running beneath it. Auckland City Council acquired fourteen acres of the swamp in 1927, donated by the families of early residents S. L. Hirst and James Gribble, whose names combined to give the park its own. Once the swamp was drained and levelled, Gribblehirst Park opened on 28 March 1931, with a playground established the same year and cricket wickets added in 1937. Council upgraded the equipment in 1974 and again through 1998 to 2007. Today the grounds also host Gribblehirst Community Hub and the Auckland Central Community Shed, both housed in the former Edendale Bowling Club building since 2016, alongside a remnant patch of lava rock forest, a tangible trace of the underground cave system that gave this ground its original Māori name.

Practical Info

Onsite amenities include public toilets, two drinking fountains, a barbecue, picnic tables and seating, and the park operates a smokefree policy. The basketball court here was refreshed in 2020 alongside similar upgrades at nearby Potter's Park.
