Hinemoa Park

Hinemoa Park is a small neighbourhood reserve in Kaiapoi, reached from both Fairweather Crescent and Belcher Street, with a compact bark surfaced play space and a slide suitable for young children with adult assistance.

History and Cultural

The reserve takes its name from the Hinemoa Hockey Club, one of New Zealand's oldest women's hockey clubs. Hockey was first played in the country at Kaiapoi around 1892, and the women's Hinemoa club, formed in 1896, hosted what is recorded as the country's first ladies' hockey match in October 1897. The men's and women's clubs later merged into today's Hinemoa Kaiapoi Hockey Club.

Practical Info

A pathway and cycleway run through the reserve, with seating provided and on street parking nearby. There is no significant shade over the play equipment, and dogs must be kept on a lead.
