Waikōwhai Park

Waikōwhai Park is a playground with the largest block of native forest left on the Auckland isthmus at its back door, giving families a swing set and a real bush walk in the same visit rather than a choice between them.

Equipment

The play area is compact but well specced: swings including an infant swing, a novelty tower with both a straight slide and a tubular slide, an embankment slide, a flying fox, a see-saw, a rotonet and a climbing net of ropes and beams, plus spring toys for younger kids to bounce on. Bark surfacing runs underfoot rather than rubber, in keeping with the park's bush setting.

Access and Inclusion

Off street parking makes this an easier stop than many inner suburb playgrounds, and paths lead straight from the car park to both the play area and the wider Waikōwhai Walkway, so prams and less mobile visitors can reach the equipment without navigating rough track first. The kohekohe forest immediately behind the playground is Council recognised as a significant ecological area, adding a genuine nature stop within a short walk.

History and Cultural

The land was gifted by the Wesleyan Mission Trust to the Mt Roskill Road Board in 1909, considered too infertile to farm and left uncleared, which is why Waikōwhai still holds the Auckland isthmus's largest native forest block today. The park opened in February 1914 and became a popular spot for swimming, camping and picnics. Long before European settlement, Tāmaki Māori used a trail through Waikōwhai linking Te Tōanga Waka, the Whau River portage, to Onehunga, part of a network connecting the Manukau and Waitematā harbours. The adjoining Waikōwhai Walkway to Lynfield Cove passes over 200 indigenous plant species, though sections were damaged in the January 2023 floods. Repairs backed by the Fix and Finish Fund have reconnected the boardwalk, with full completion expected by 2027.

Practical Info

Onsite amenities include public toilets, a drinking fountain, a barbecue, picnic tables and seating, and the park operates under Council's smokefree policy. Bring a hat, and check tide times if continuing along the harbour, since parts of the walkway are only passable near low tide.
