Kyle Park

Kyle Park is a nine hectare reserve in Hornby that pairs a children's playground with one of Christchurch's most active BMX tracks, plus the Hornby Matatiki Centre on its eastern edge. It works well for families who want to combine a playground visit with swimming, biking or a library trip in one stop.

Where it is

Hornby is a residential and retail suburb at the western edge of Christchurch, connected to the city centre and the South Island by State Highway 1 and the Christchurch Southern Motorway. The park sits on Waterloo Road between the southern motorway and the railway line, close to the Hornby shopping strip. Hornby Mall is a short walk across Waterloo Road, and the park is easy to reach by car or bus.

The Matatiki Centre

The Hornby Matatiki Centre, opened in April 2024, houses a lane pool, hydrotherapy pool, learn to swim pool, toddlers' wet play area, spa pool, library, cafe and a creative arts space with a laser cutter, 3D printer and audio visual recording equipment.

BMX and playground

The Christchurch City BMX Club's home track is a 400 metre course with a proper high start hill, multiple jumps and large concrete bermed turns, maintained by club volunteers and open to the public outside training and competition sessions. The club runs a Sprocket programme for children aged three to seven, with summer season training from September to March.

The children's playground itself suits primary school age children, with a mix of climbing, swinging and open running space on the surrounding lawn. Between the playground, the BMX track and the wider park, the age range covered here runs from toddlers through to teens and adults.
