Equipment
Lakeside Playground is a community playground in the Lakeside residential development on the northern edge of Te Kauwhata. It opened on 21 February 2026 at an official event attended by approximately 250 residents, families, and visitors. The playground was developed by Winton in partnership with Nga Muka, with input from Waikato District Council. Equipment includes big slides, hexagon swings, a flying fox, pump tracks, water play elements, and a half-size basketball court. Cultural play elements include a seesaw designed in the form of a waka hurdle and a climbing structure designed in the form of a tuna hinaki (eel trap).
Access and Inclusion
The playground is free to access year-round. It was designed through extensive community consultation involving local schools (Waerenga School, Te Kauwhata Primary, Te Kauwhata College) and around 80 to 100 residents, with the design shaped to address a specific community request for water play, which was identified as lacking in Te Kauwhata. Inclusive design was a stated priority, with the playground intended to accommodate children of all abilities. BBQ facilities, toilets, and seating are available on-site.
History and Cultural
The playground was developed with a Matariki theme, incorporating themes of renewal, growth, and connection. Cultural design was developed in collaboration with Mana Whenua and the Te Kauwhata Community Committee, ensuring Maori values and narratives were embedded meaningfully in the play equipment. The waka hurdle seesaw and tuna hinaki climbing frame directly reference the rivers, waterways, and food traditions of the local area. Lakeside is a large residential development by Winton that has brought significant population growth to Te Kauwhata since the 2010s.
