Okains Bay campground

Okains Bay campground's playground is a small to medium bark-surfaced play area built around 2018, with a basket swing, a climbing frame, a slide and a climbing net. The basket swing and assisted slide suit toddlers well, while the climbing net and frame give older siblings somewhere to climb, and there is no shade over the equipment, so a hat is worth packing for a midday visit. It sits inside the working campground on Banks Peninsula, primarily there for guests staying on site, a short walk from a working general store, a nationally significant museum and a sheltered beach.

The play area covers a compact 464 square metre footprint on bark surfacing, sized for a quick stop between camp chores and a walk to the beach rather than a destination in its own right.

History and Cultural

Okains Bay, known in Maori as Okeina, carries deep significance for Ngati Huikai and the wider Ngai Tahu, with occupation by Waitaha, Ngati Mamoe and Ngai Tahu recorded over generations. The rangatira Moki led an expeditionary force south in the waka Makawhiua in the eighteenth century, drawn by the bay's sheltered karaka tree groves, and nearby Kawatea remains a wahi taonga in that history. That heritage is held today at the Okains Bay Maori and Colonial Museum, founded in 1977 when Murray Thacker gifted his own lifelong collection into public ownership. It now holds more than 20,000 items across relocated heritage buildings, including a whare whakairo and a pataka carved by master carver John Rua.

The campground sits in a village anchored by the Okains Bay Store, trading continuously since 1873, with off street parking near the playground. The Little Okains Walk, a twenty minute stroll to a secluded beach with caves and native bellbirds, starts nearby, alongside the Millennium Bridge trail and the Big Hill scenic viewpoint.
