Opunake Walkway Playground

Children scramble up its slopes, peer through talking tubes and slide back down, while custom-built surfboards alongside it capture the ocean spirit of Ōpunakē in a way that immediately tells you this is no ordinary park.

The playground sits at the southern end of Ōpunakē Beach, adjacent to the Surf Life Saving building and the Ōpunakē Beach Holiday Park, in a wide flat reserve with open sea views. Ōpunakē is a small coastal town in South Taranaki, about 75 kilometres south-west of New Plymouth along State Highway 45, the Surf Highway. The beach itself wraps between two basalt headlands that shelter it from the open Tasman, giving it an unusually calm and safe character. Coin-operated gas barbecues and picnic tables are set up near the surf club, making it easy to combine a long lunch with a play session. The Ōpunakē Loop Pathway, a seven-kilometre clifftop and lake circuit rated suitable for low-to-medium fitness walkers, begins and ends just steps from the playground, so families can extend the visit into a proper half-day outing along the coast.

Beyond the mountain centrepiece and the surfboard balance elements, the playground includes swings and a communal hammock that doubles as a social gathering spot. The ocean theme runs through the design, blending maunga and moana with native planting nods that echo the nearby Egmont National Park. The open beach reserve means there is no shade from the equipment itself; the nearby pohutukawa trees that line the holiday park fence provide the best shelter on a hot day. A seasonal paddling pool on the reserve is operated by South Taranaki District Council and runs during summer months, providing a gentle splash option for toddlers who are not yet ready for the open surf.

This spot is best suited to families with children aged two to ten. The reserve is unfenced and opens directly onto the beach foreshore, so supervision near the water is essential, especially when the surf is running. The playground surface uses rubber matting around the main structures. There is no dedicated shade structure over the equipment, so sunscreen and hats are important through the school holiday season. The beach is patrolled by surf lifesavers over summer, giving parents a reassurance margin that most New Zealand beach playgrounds cannot match.

The surf life saving clubhouse provides a toilet block nearby. Parking is available in the flat reserve alongside the holiday park on Beach Road. The community indoor baths, with four heated pools and a long operating season from late September through to late April, are a short walk up into town for cooler days. Ōpunakē also has a cinema, a mural trail, and a surf shop offering lessons and board hire, so there is genuinely enough to build a full day around the beach precinct.
