Rautawhiri Park is Helensville's largest sports park, on Rautawhiri Road in north-west Auckland, and its playground sits beside the eastern car park among courts, open lawn and a wide concrete path around the fields. Families tend to pair a play with a walk on that path or a sibling's netball or tennis game, as the park is home to rugby, league, netball, tennis and cricket.1
Equipment
The council lists climbing equipment, platforms and ladders, plus an accessible basket swing near the toilets.1 From above, the play area is one large loose-fill pad: a small unit with a yellow roof and a blue slide in one corner looks aimed at under-fives, and the rest is rows of low climbing and balance pieces that suit school-age kids better. One reviewer calls the playground old and lacking, which is fair if you expect a destination site. Older kids have more to do elsewhere in the park: a skate manual pad, a full basketball court, four tennis courts, and fitness stations (dip bench, overhead ladder, push-up bars) spaced around the eastern fields.1
Access and Inclusion
Wide, flat paths link the playground, fields and car parks, and each car park has two mobility spaces. The accessible toilet has a doorway under 80cm wide.1 The play area is not fenced and sits right beside the car park, so keep an eye on runners. Dogs are not allowed on the playground and must be on a leash near it.1
History and Cultural
A $2.3 million upgrade of the 11 hectare park brought new court surfaces, drainage, lights and the first stage of a planned 2km perimeter path.2 The Lions Club of Helensville donated the fitness stations, and the upgraded park was blessed by a local kaumātua and opened by Mayor Phil Goff in February 2019.3
Practical Info
Toilets and a drinking fountain sit between the car parks and the fields. The car park gate and toilets open 7am to 9pm in summer and 7am to 7pm in winter, so check the time before a late visit.1 Bus stop 4936 near Kaipara College is about 250m away.1 There is no shade sail visible from above, just a few nearby trees, so bring hats in summer. For a newer, nature-themed play space with swings, slides and a spinning bucket, Cabeleigh Drive Pond Reserve is under a kilometre away.4
