Royal Reserve Playground

Royal Reserve Playground turned an overgrown field in Massey into one of Auckland's standout play spaces, built around a two metre wide hill slide, the only one of its kind in Auckland.

Equipment

The hill slide is reached via custom built climbing towers. Further equipment includes a spring toy, novelty towers with a tubular slide, an inground trampoline, a spinning disk, a see-saw, an inground carousel, a tunnel, swings with an infant swing, a basket swing, a spinning basket, and a half basketball court. Learn to ride bike tracks for both juniors and seniors wind through the reserve, complete with pretend road markings, signs and skills challenge features.

Access and Inclusion

An accessible junior play area sits alongside the main equipment, giving younger children and those with additional needs their own space to play. Two car parks, including accessible parks, keep the walk to the equipment short, and pedestrians can also reach the reserve from Carnelian Court, Baumea Rise and Richfield Crescent.

History and Cultural

Before this rebuild, Royal Reserve was a plain, underused field. It reopened in January 2019 after an 18 month construction project, replacing the old field with the current playground and bike tracks.

Practical Info

Royal Reserve is on Beauchamp Drive in Massey, with toilets, fitness equipment, picnic tables and seating, electric barbecues, drinking fountains and bike stands on site. Dogs are not permitted in the play area. Gates are open from 7am to 9pm daily, and the wider reserve is a large grassed open space well suited to a longer family visit.
