West Harbour Reserve is a small neighbourhood playground on a lawn off West Harbour Drive in West Harbour, Auckland, and its real draw sits behind it. The mown slope drops into native bush, and a track leads down to a long footbridge over a mangrove-lined creek.
Reviewers love the walk: ferns, a stream and that bridge. It crosses Lawsons Creek, linking West Harbour Drive with Allington Road and Realm Esplanade, and the council rates it as a spot to watch the estuary below.1 Photos show the bush track getting properly muddy, so boots beat sandals. One reviewer found both ends of the bridge a bit dodgy and would avoid it after dark.
Equipment
The play area is a long strip of sand-coloured soft-fall edged in concrete, with a path looping around it. We have no close-up photos yet, but aerial imagery shows a swing frame, a compact climbing unit with a roofed tower, and what looks like a basket swing at the far end. It is a modest set best suited to under-fives and younger school kids; older children will get more out of the bush track.
Practical Info
The play area is not fenced, though a post-and-rail fence runs along the street edge of the lawn. There is no shade sail over the equipment, only a tree or two at the western end. Park on West Harbour Drive. We could not confirm toilets here; for those, plus a much bigger playground, a grass pump track and barbecues, Moire Park is about 450 m away and has pedestrian access from West Harbour Drive.2 Da Vinci Park is a similar distance away.
