Moire Park

Moire Park's playground in Massey, west Auckland, is a purpose built discovery play space called Papa Rehia o Tuhura, with a tall play tower, inground trampolines and a nature play sandpit suited to a wide age range from toddlers through to primary schoolers.

Equipment

The standout is a play tower fitted with a twisty covered slide and a wide accessible slide reached by a timber ramp, giving children who use wheelchairs or walkers a route into the elevated structure. Around it sit inground trampolines flush with rubber surfacing, talking tubes, a basket swing, a balance module with poles and planks, and a sandpit where kids can dig for hidden oysters and eels. The whole play zone is rubber surfaced.

Access and Inclusion

The wide ramp onto the tower and the flush trampolines make this one of the more genuinely accessible playgrounds in west Auckland. Accessible toilets and mobility parking are on site.

History and Cultural

The playground was designed in partnership with Te Kawerau a Maki under a brief to encourage exploration and discovery, and its name Papa Rehia o Tuhura translates to discovery play space.

Practical Info

A grass pump track for bikes and scooters, two walking tracks through native bush (the Manutewhau Path and the Moire Park Path), and sports fields share the wider 30 hectare reserve. Picnic tables, barbecues and a shade shelter sit beside the playground, and car parks off Granville Drive include mobility spaces.
