Tūhura Playground

Tūhura Playground at Moire Park in Massey, Auckland, is a discovery themed nature play space, co-designed with Te Kawerau a Maki, built around a large timber play module with an accessible ramp and a wide slide. Inground trampolines, a balance module of poles and planks, and a sandpit round out the equipment for a range of ages.

Equipment

The timber play module's accessible ramp and wide slide sit alongside inground trampolines, a balance module with poles and planks, and swings. A sandpit hides tio, oysters, and tuna, eels, for children to discover, and a tunnel and embankment slide add more to the mix. A half basketball court and shade sails cover part of the equipment.

History and Cultural

Tūhura means discovery in te reo Māori. The playground was co-designed with Te Kawerau a Maki, tangata whenua of the Henderson-Massey area, and the sandpit's hidden oysters and eels are part of guided nature discovery play built into the design.

Practical Info

The playground opened within the last five years, on Granville Road at Moire Park. A drinking fountain, picnic tables, and seating are on site, with on-street angle parking, and dogs are not permitted.
