Tokoroa 3420 Playground

This playground is located within the Lake Moananui Reserve in Tokoroa, a popular lakeside green space off Maraetai Road and Arawa Crescent.

Equipment

The playground features modern equipment installed in 2014, suited to young children. It is set within the larger Lake Moananui Reserve, which includes a 2.5 km sealed walkway around the lake, exercise stations, picnic areas, and dog-friendly spaces.

Access and Inclusion

Access is available from both Maraetai Road and Arawa Crescent, with off-street parking at both entry points. The reserve's sealed perimeter path is pram and wheelchair friendly. Public toilets are on site. Dogs are welcome on leash, with a dedicated off-leash area on the west side. The reserve is smokefree in line with South Waikato District Council policy.

History and Cultural

Lake Moananui Reserve was built around a man-made lake constructed by Matamata County Council in 1974/75. The name Moananui means "big water" in Maori. Its development involved volunteer labour from local service clubs who built bridges, pagodas, picnic areas, and paths, with council covering material costs. The Friends of the Lake community group was established in 2015 to support ongoing management. A new playground was installed in 2014 and exercise stations followed in 2015, reflecting continued community investment in the reserve.
