Tokoroa War Memorial Sports Ground

The playground at Tokoroa War Memorial Sports Ground sits inside a seven-hectare reserve on Mossop Road that doubles as Tokoroa's main community sports hub, an easy add-on stop for families already at the grounds or the adjoining South Waikato Sport and Events Centre. Equipment is modest: a multi-play structure with slide, a basket swing and swings including an infant swing, all on a bark safety surface.

Equipment

The infant swing and assisted slide make the play area accessible to toddlers with carer support, while the multi-play structure and basket swing suit primary school ages. There is no shade over the equipment or seating, though large established trees nearby offer shelter elsewhere in the grounds.

History and Cultural

The sportsground was formally opened on 17 October 1953 by Major General Sir Howard Kippenberger as a living memorial to Tokoroa residents who served overseas in the Second World War. Memorial gates at the corner of State Highway 1 and Mossop Road carry three tablets naming the park, dedicating it to the war dead, and recording the opening date, with cypress trees planted nearby in their honour. A concrete memorial plinth replaced the original gates in 2005, adding a tablet commemorating VJ Day.
