Waiewe Street Playground

Waiewe Street Playground, listed on the council register as Waiewe Playground, is a small neighbourhood playground in residential Whakatane with good shade over its equipment.

Equipment

The playground has see-saws, swings and a climbing frame, on a bark surface, suited to younger children in the surrounding streets.

Access and Inclusion

On-street parking serves the site, and the simple layout and bark surface work well for toddlers.

History and Cultural

Waiewe Street adjoins Waiewe Camellia Park, a compact reserve noted for its camellia and Michelia flowering shrubs. Whakatane holds deep significance for Ngati Awa, whose ancestral waka Mataatua landed here roughly 700 years ago.
