Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park

Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park on Brymer Road in Rotokauri, Hamilton sits alongside Hamilton Zoo and offers a well-shaded playground that suits families combining a zoo visit with outdoor play. The play space was established within the last five years and caters well to toddlers and younger primary-age children, with several ground-level pieces making it accessible for little ones.

Equipment

The main play area carries an inground carousel, mini trampolines, a climbing mound, a tunnel, an embankment slide, a deep dish rocker, a climbing frame, balance equipment, and a wheel rocker. The inground carousel and mini trampolines are the standout pieces for toddlers, sitting flush with the artificial-grass surface so small children can climb on and off without steps. The embankment slide suits younger children with adult assistance. Additional play structures are scattered through the adjacent zoo precinct: two slides sit by the chimpanzee enclosure, a climbing frame is near the meerkats, and swings are positioned by the Oasis Lawn.

Access and Inclusion

The park has accessible pathways connecting the key areas of the reserve, and several ground-level pieces (carousel, mini trampolines) minimise the step-up barrier for toddlers. Shade sails provide excellent coverage over some play equipment and seating in the junior area. A substantial covered structure shelters spectators, and picnic tables have shade umbrellas. Off-street parking is available on site.
