Westlake Reserve Playground

Westlake Reserve Playground is a small, woodchip surfaced playground in Halswell, built around a wooden fort with a slide and set right beside one of the suburb's defining features: a lake that draws walkers, joggers, cyclists and duck feeding families every day of the week.

Equipment

The compact play area centres on the wooden fort and slide, alongside a climbing frame and swings (including an infant seat). It's a straightforward, well used setup best suited to a stop on a longer loop of the lake rather than a destination in itself.

Access and Inclusion

The infant swing suits young families directly, and public toilets and a drinking fountain are on site alongside seating for caregivers.

History and Cultural

After vehicles entered the lake on two separate occasions, Christchurch City Council installed permanent barriers along the shoreline and added landscaping to soften their visual impact, making the lakeside setting safer for families arriving with small children. Halswell takes its name from Edmund Halswell QC (1790 to 1874) and sits around nine kilometres southwest of Cathedral Square.

Practical Info

The reserve sits close to residential streets and is easy to reach on foot, with parking available nearby. For a longer outing, Halswell Domain has its own playground, skatepark, boating pond and miniature railway, and the 60 hectare Halswell Quarry Park adds walking and mountain bike trails a short drive away.
