Longhurst Playground

Longhurst Playground is a fully fenced, single gate neighbourhood playground in the Longhurst development on Halswell's western edge in Christchurch, best suited to children aged three and up who want climbing and physical challenge over standard swings-and-slide equipment. It's one of the cleaner examples of new build play design in the south west of the city.

Equipment

Inside the fence, a multi-play structure with slides sits alongside balance logs and mounds, plus a drinking fountain. A wooden beam crosses an ornamental waterway to a small island, adding a bit of incidental adventure beyond the standard equipment, and a wooden boxed seating structure doubles as a small stage for imaginative play.

Access and inclusion

The fully fenced enclosure with single gate entry is a real asset for families with runners, letting younger children move freely without the constant watch an open reserve demands.

Practical info

Public toilets and picnic tables are on site within the adjacent Longhurst commercial precinct, which has a cafe, a Subway, a pharmacy and a medical centre at the same intersection as the playground entrance. A landscaped swale runs through the reserve with walking paths, small bridges and outdoor fitness equipment alongside the route. Street parking is available on Hamill Road, and Halswell Quarry Park plus the Halswell Library and community hub are within a five to ten minute drive.
