Riddiford Gardens Playground

Riddiford Gardens Playground is a modern play area folded into a century-old public garden in the heart of Lower Hutt, its climbing structure, tractor and splash pad sitting on the same ground that once held New Zealand's largest outdoor pool.

Equipment

The play area sits within the wider gardens rather than standing alone, centred on a multi play structure with a slide, a tractor for younger climbers, spring toys, swings including an infant seat, and imaginative play equipment. A splash pad adds water play in summer, and a half basketball court with a skateable plaza give older kids their own zone.

Access and Inclusion

An accessible entrance into the gardens is confirmed. An early upgrade stage rebuilt the cenotaph and Anzac Memorial Lawn with fully accessible landscaping, and the Riddiford Pavilion, built in 2018, has two fully accessible public toilets and a kiosk while housing an electrical substation. Two bridges linking the path to the playground were rebuilt in the final stage. Parking is on street, and dogs are welcome too.

History and Cultural

Few play areas here carry this much civic weight. The gardens began as a rough paddock bought by the Borough Council in the early 1920s, becoming Lower Hutt's first public park by resolution on 30 July 1923. They take their name from the Riddiford family, who funded the open air pool built around 1926 that made the gardens a summer institution until its 1982 closure. By 1931 the gardens held rock and alpine gardens, an aviary and a conservatory, anchoring the site as Lower Hutt built its Civic Precinct around it. A fountain gifted in 1975 from a Karori estate stood as a landmark for decades before a new water feature replaced it in a redevelopment that won a landscape architects award in 2019.

Riddiford Gardens covers 3.2 hectares in Hutt Central, beside the library, events centre and council buildings, so a visit pairs easily with nearby errands. There is no dedicated car park; on street parking is the norm, and the stream through the gardens means younger children need supervision.
