Cass Square Playground

Cass Square Playground in Hokitika is built around a clock tower centrepiece that echoes the town's historic landmark, with climbing walls, slides and talk tubes threading between levels.

Equipment

Beyond the clock tower, the playground has a waka structure referencing the river and sea routes that shaped Hokitika's history, a flying fox, a carousel, a see saw, swings and multiple slides for different age groups. Ground level interactive panels include sign language and braille alongside games, and textured rubber matting covers the play surface.

Access and Inclusion

Wide pathways and gate openings, smooth transitions between zones, and accessible benches and tables mean wheelchair users and families with pushchairs can move through the whole site.

History and Cultural

The 2024 rebuild was completed by Creospace, shaped by a community working group and the fundraising group Let's Play Hokitika, with the goal of honouring the town's Maori and colonial heritage while making the space genuinely inclusive.

Practical Info

New public toilets sit adjacent to the playground, and street parking is available around the square. Cass Square sits on Weld Street in central Hokitika, a short flat walk from the town's shops.
