Children's Playground

The playground along Centennial Drive threads through one of Matamata's most pleasant green corridors, a leafy linear reserve that runs from Tainui Street down to Broadway, the town's main thoroughfare. The drive is lined on both sides with native plantings and magnolia gardens, and an entrance water feature marks the beginning of the reserve for visitors arriving on foot from the northern end. Park benches, picnic tables, and drinking fountains are spread throughout, giving the whole strip a relaxed, garden-like atmosphere that makes it as much a quiet walking route for adults as a play destination for children.

Matamata is a compact market town in the Waikato, best known to visitors as the location of the Hobbiton Movie Set at nearby Hinuera. The town centre itself has a strong community feel, with the reserve acting as a green spine running through the residential streets just back from Broadway's shops and cafes. The Matamata Domain, which hosts a major playground upgrade project and features modular play equipment, a flying fox, and a fenced toddler area, is a short drive away off Meura Street for families wanting a larger destination stop.

The Centennial Drive playground offers climbing equipment, slides, and swings within the garden setting. The layout favours younger children, and the mature tree canopy provides genuine shade across much of the play area, a real advantage during the Waikato's warm summers. The picnic infrastructure surrounding the play space makes this a practical option for families having lunch in town, with the open grassed surrounds giving plenty of room to spread out.

A short walk connects Centennial Drive to the Tom Grant Drive extension, which runs between Rawhiti Avenue and Tawari Street. This section of reserve has its own playground, upgraded in June 2024 through a community-funded project that saw the Tom Grant Drive Committee partner with the Matamata-Piako District Council. The new equipment, built by Playground Creations, adds swings, play structures, and seating to what had been an older swing set in need of renewal. The two reserves sit close enough to combine into a single outing, making the corridor a surprisingly complete family walk.

The Centennial Drive playground suits families with children roughly two to eight years old. Younger toddlers will find the swings and simpler equipment accessible, and the shaded setting makes it comfortable for extended visits even in warmer weather. The unfenced open layout requires supervision near the footpath edges, though traffic is light on the internal drive.

Practical amenities are well covered: drinking fountains and picnic tables are positioned along the reserve, and street parking is available from both the Tainui Street and Broadway ends of Centennial Drive. The town centre shops, cafes, and the Matamata Library are all within a short walk, making a playground stop here easy to fold into a town-centre errand run.
