Childrens Playground & Biketrack

The Childrens Playground and Bike Track sits alongside the Grassroots Trust Velodrome at the Avantidrome in Cambridge, giving families a free, open-access play and bike area attached to New Zealand's national cycling hub.

Equipment

A multi-play structure with tubular slide and swings including an infant swing anchor the playground, on a bark surface. Next door, the Gallagher Bike Skills Park is the standout: a sealed learn-to-ride circuit with working traffic lights, stop signs and give-way markings, plus a separate fenced preschool loop for balance bikes and trikes, and a rougher dirt track for confident riders aged ten and up.

Access and Inclusion

Tunnels and low-level equipment suit toddlers on the playground side, while the fenced preschool bike circuit keeps very young riders away from faster traffic on the main track. A generous main carpark with overflow paddock space handles busy weekends.

Practical Info

On-site toilets, the Bikery Cafe inside the velodrome, and Avanti Bike Shop rentals (including e-bikes) make this a genuine half-day stop. The Te Awa River Ride cycling path runs from the Avantidrome 19 kilometres to Karapiro for families wanting to extend the visit.
