About Waipa

What it's like for kids.

Cambridge's tree-lined streets shelter most of Waipā's best play spaces, and Lake Te Koo Utu playground makes the most of it: a lagoon-shaped play unit, basket swing, and in-ground trampoline sit on the loop walk around the water, rebuilt in stages and reopened after a 12-week upgrade. A few streets over in Leamington, Thompson Street Playground was rebuilt from the ground up at the end of 2021, keeping the original flying fox and seesaw but adding stepping logs and a sealed bike loop through natural timber. Leamington Domain pairs its slides and trampolines with water play for hot afternoons, while Terry Came Drive on Cambridge's northern edge swaps the usual gear for a hamster wheel, musical panels, and a wheelchair-accessible carousel.

Te Awamutu plays a bigger game: Pop 'n' Good Playground in Pioneer Park is one of the largest builds in the district, with a tower running tubular and embankment slides, a splash pad, and a bike skills track next door. The Rose Garden's Our Space playground runs its equipment in age bands from toddlers to twelve-year-olds along Gorst Avenue, a short stroll from the rose beds that give the town its Rose Town name. Parking is easy in both towns, and Cambridge to Te Awamutu is a 25 minute drive, so a morning at one and an afternoon at the other is a realistic day out.
