Riverside Park is Cambridge's showpiece green corridor along the Waikato River, stretching across 102 hectares of riverbank reserve accessible from Dominion Avenue in Leamington. It bundles together a children's playground, a skate park and pump track, picnic areas, a boat ramp, and the start of the Settlers Track bushwalk, making it one of the most complete family destinations in the Waipa District and a natural anchor for a full day out in Cambridge.
Cambridge sits on the Waikato River roughly 20 kilometres south of Hamilton. The town is well regarded for its tree-lined streets, heritage architecture, strong equestrian culture, and the kind of well-kept main street that repays a post-park coffee stop with family in tow. The Dominion Avenue entry to Riverside Park sits on the Leamington side of the river, the newer residential part of town. Families arriving here find an immediate facilities hub: toilets and parking are both at this entrance, which makes it a practical and well-signposted starting point for an outing with young children. The reserve follows the riverbank north from this entry, giving the whole site a long, linear quality well suited to walking or cycling along the water's edge. The Waikato River forms a constant backdrop, with the historic High Level Bridge visible upstream.
The playground at Riverside Park provides a solid base for younger visitors. The site includes swings, a slide, climbing equipment, an in-ground trampoline, and picnic tables in a shaded setting. The in-ground trampoline is a consistent favourite among playground-age children, and the picnic tables alongside the play area mean families can settle in properly rather than just passing through. The reserve's established tree cover and riverside vegetation provide natural shade around the play zone, which is welcome on warm Waikato afternoons.
Adjacent to the playground, the Cambridge skatepark was significantly upgraded and reopened at the end of 2022. The 770-square-metre facility features a large flow bowl, quarter pipes, a street section with rails, ledges and stairs, and a Velosolutions pump track system with a 196-metre pump loop and a 222-metre jump track joined by a central bowl. A shaded hangout area connects the skate facilities to the broader activity spaces along Dominion Avenue. Together, the playground and skate area serve a wide sweep of ages from small children through to teenagers and young adults, which is an uncommon breadth for a single reserve.
The Settlers Track runs from the Dominion Avenue end of the reserve at river level along the northern bank of the Waikato, passing under the Victoria Bridge, a historic steel arch structure built in 1907 that stands 35 metres above the water. The track covers 1.8 kilometres and takes roughly 30 to 60 minutes, running through riverbank planting that supports birdlife and riparian flora. It is an easy, largely flat walk, well suited to families with older children capable of managing some steps. The boat ramp near the Karapiro Stream junction provides river access for kayakers and small craft.
