F W Delamain Park

F W Delamain Park playground on Buchanans Road in Yaldhurst, on the western edge of Christchurch where the city gives way to the open Canterbury Plains, keeps things honest: a flying fox, a multi-play structure with tubular slide, a see-saw, and a solid swing set. It suits ages three to eleven well, with equipment that earns its keep rather than chasing novelty.

Equipment

The playground centres on a multi-play structure with a tubular slide and a flying fox that runs a good length across the play zone. A see-saw and swings, including an infant swing for the youngest visitors, round out the set, all sitting on a bark-chip surface covering approximately 463 square metres.

Access and inclusion

On street parking is available on Buchanans Road, the site is flat, and the play area is accessible for prams. The playground itself is unfenced and the wider reserve is open. Poles for a shade sail over the swings and see saw area are in place but the sail has not been installed in recent years, though established trees nearby offer some shade for spectators.

History and cultural

The Delamain subdivision and park are named for Frederick William Delamain, a settler and horse breeder who farmed the wider Yaldhurst area in the nineteenth century. The park predates 2009 and sits within a development that grew significantly after the 2010 Canterbury earthquakes brought new residential growth to the city's western fringe. Buchanans Road connects directly to the airport corridor and State Highway One, putting the park within easy reach for families from Yaldhurst, Hornby and Rolleston.
