Hammond Park

Hammond Park is a fully fenced riverside playground in the Riverlea suburb of Hamilton, set within one of the city's most ecologically significant forest remnants on the banks of the Waikato River (Waikato Awa). The equipment mix suits toddlers through to early primary age, and the surrounding reserve makes it worth combining with a longer family outing.

Equipment

The playground was renewed using natural materials chosen to reflect the surrounding native forest. Equipment includes a basket swing, double slide, balance beams, stepping logs, climbing poles, scrambling net, spring rocker, and a spinner. The full perimeter fence gives younger children room to roam without caregivers having to track every step.

Access and Inclusion

The site is wheelchair and pram accessible via the main river loop track. Off-street car parking is available at the park. No toilet facilities are on site, so it is worth planning accordingly for longer visits. Picnic tables and benches are provided.

History and Cultural

Hammond Park preserves one of the last patches of original pre-European forest remaining in Hamilton, with more than 145 native plant species recorded in a single hectare. The park provides habitat for ruru (morepork) and the long-tailed bat (Pekapeka-tou-roa). The play equipment renewal in 2021 was timed to coincide with the completion of the Te Awa River Ride trail through the reserve, a shared walking and cycling path that threads along the Waikato River through Riverlea.

Practical Info

Off-street parking is available at the park. Around 4 km of walking and cycling trails run through native bush and farmland alongside the river, with a 1 km riverside walkway also accessible from the playground. A sandy beach near the car park suits toddler digging and paddling in the shallow water. Hamilton City Council's smokefree policy applies across all green spaces.
