Harling Park

Harling Park's most photographed feature is not the playground but the Japanese garden, built in 2005 as part of Blenheim's sister-city relationship with Tendo and Otari, Japan: a walled space with a waterfall, koi pond and traditional pagoda set inside a six-hectare suburban reserve. The playground and the garden coexist at the southern end of Witherlea, where a walking path connects directly through to the Wither Hills Farm Park trails.

Equipment

Climbing structures and swings form the core of the play area. One of the most distinctive features at Harling Park is a sealed mini road-skills circuit where children can practice riding bikes and scooters, learn to follow road markings, and get comfortable with intersections in a traffic-free setting. The play area includes a fenced section to help keep younger children contained.

Access and Inclusion

The park is accessible from three directions: Howick Road to the west, Solway Drive to the east, and a walking path south to the Wither Hills Farm Park. Public toilets are at the Howick Road entrance, making the western access point the practical choice for families with young children. Parking is available along both Howick Road and Solway Drive. The park is predominantly open and unfenced at its outer edges. The wider park functions as an off-leash dog exercise area; the walled Japanese garden is fenced separately and can be visited independently.

History and Cultural

The park is named after S. P. Harling, Blenheim's mayor from 1962 to 1977. The Japanese garden was completed in 2005 through the sister-city relationship with Tendo and Otari, Japan, and has since served as a venue for community cultural exchanges and educational visits. The formal garden is maintained separately from the off-leash dog area, and the contrast between the two makes Harling Park one of the more layered neighbourhood reserves in the region.

Practical Info

Picnic tables are spread across the park lawns. Public toilets are at the Howick Road entrance. The park is free and open year-round under Marlborough District Council management. The walking connection south to Wither Hills Farm Park turns a playground stop into a longer family outing without returning to the car.
