Horton Park

Horton Park is a small, classic style playground on Redwood Street in central Blenheim, with swings, an infant swing, a see saw and standard climbing structures on a bark surface. It suits toddlers through to primary age kids and doubles as the home ground of Marlborough Cricket.

Equipment

Swings with an infant seat, a see saw and standard climbing equipment make up the play area on bark safety surfacing. A half basketball court and tennis and netball hoops sit nearby for older children, and the open cricket field gives extra room to run around.

History and Cricket

The reserve was originally known as the Domain before being renamed Horton Park in 1907 after Thomas Horton, who worked to secure the land as a public recreation reserve. Marlborough Cricket moved its home ground here in 1919 and the park hosted its first first class match in December 1972, when Central Districts played Northern Districts in the Plunket Shield. The pitch was resurfaced ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Practical Info

Public toilets and a drinking fountain are on site. On street parking is available on both the Redwood Street and Stephenson Street frontages, and established trees give some shade for spectators. Dogs are allowed under control but not in the playground area. Marlborough District Council operates a smokefree policy over the playground.
