Mr Harry Romanes OBE performed the opening. The incorporated society was founded in 1985 and construction began on 2 August 1986.

The 7.9-hectare reserve's homestead was built around 1907 and is a Category II listed heritage building. A $400,000 refurbishment of the homestead was completed including wheelchair access, new kitchen, toilets, heat pumps, lighting and sprinklers.
