The playground beside the Mangere Boating Club sits on a grassy point off Kiwi Esplanade in Māngere Bridge, Auckland, with the Manukau Harbour on three sides and boat ramps either side of the reserve.1 It is really two small playgrounds on one reserve, and families come for the setting as much as the gear: fish and chips on the grass, a play, then a stroll along the shore.
Equipment
Auckland Council describes two separate play areas, one for preschoolers and one for primary-aged kids.1 The junior area has an imaginative boat feature; the older one has an old-style climbing frame with a bridge, tunnel and slides, plus a pair of swings looking across the water towards Māngere Bridge.1 Both are on bark. Reviewers call the equipment older but well kept, one wishes there were more for very young toddlers, another more challenge for bigger kids. A basketball half-court sits next to the playground by the shoreline.1
Practical Info
There is no shade over the play areas and no fence, and the beach is only a short run away, so pack hats and keep little ones in sight.1 Toilets, a drinking fountain and picnic tables are by the car park and playground. The toilets and car park gates open 7am to 9pm in summer and 7am to 7pm in winter.1 Parking is plentiful. Dogs are banned on the playground and must be on a leash in the car park and the rest of the reserve.1 Locals mention flocks of birds in the cooler months, the odd rat, and bins that fill quickly on busy picnic days, and say the harbour here is not great for swimming.
History and Cultural
The Kiwi Esplanade shoreline is known for its ropey pāhoehoe lava, laid down by a Māngere Mountain eruption about 50,000 years ago, and the boating club next door dates from 1961.2 In 2024 the council asked locals about upgrading the playground and furniture: more seating and better shade topped 109 responses, and climbing, swinging and water play led the play wish list.3
The Ambury to Waikaraka Path runs past, linking west to Ambury Regional Park and north to Onehunga.1 Waterlea Park playground is about 600 m away if the kids want a second stop.
