Ellerslie takes its name from Robert Graham, a Scottish immigrant who arrived in Auckland in 1842 and named the area after Elderslie in Renfrewshire. He bought land here in 1848 and built Ellerslie House nearby, and the suburb is now best known for its racecourse, where horse racing has run since 1857.
