Orewa Playground

Orewa Reserve is the beachfront park at the heart of Orewa, on Auckland's Hibiscus Coast, its play area just a few steps from three kilometres of sand. It sits among a string of playgrounds strung along Hibiscus Coast Highway, part of what makes this stretch of coast such a magnet for family days out.

The play area combines a rocktopus climbing feature, a tubular slide, a playhouse and a swing set with a dedicated infant swing and a basket swing for younger toddlers, all set over a bark surface, and has been in place since before 2009, one of the longer running play spaces on this beachfront chain. Fitness stations sit on the path nearby for parents keen on a quick workout while the kids play, and on site barbecues and outdoor showers make it easy to rinse off sand and cook up lunch without leaving the park.

Access and Inclusion

Google's own listing confirms a step free entrance point into the reserve. Beyond that, formal accessibility details aren't recorded, but the basket swing and infant swing give younger toddlers and less confident climbers somewhere to play alongside the rocktopus and slide, and the flat run from the car park to the equipment keeps prams and scooters rolling easily.

History and Cultural

The play equipment predates 2009, but the wider reserve is entering a new chapter. In 2025 the council consulted the community on options to restore the dunes, ease beach access and protect the foreshore from erosion and rising seas, with a destination playground among the ideas on the table. Whichever option is chosen, it builds on a site that has anchored this end of the beach for years.

Practical Info

Parking is on street around the reserve, and the whole park is smokefree. Dogs are welcome, handy given the park backs directly onto the beach and the Ōrewa Beachfront Path, with a surf lifesaving club and public toilets close by for a full day at the sand. Established trees and a shade sail cover the play equipment and picnic tables, so lunch stays comfortable even on a warm Hibiscus Coast afternoon.
