Papakowhai Reserve is a small recreational and ecological reserve on Cassley Crescent in Porirua's Papakowhai suburb, where children play among coastal forest and wetland rather than at a fixed playground structure.

HistoryAotea Lagoon park opened on 22 March 1980, developed jointly by the Ministry of Works, Porirua City Council, and local service clubs around an artificial saltwater lagoon that formed after the North Island Main Trunk railway line was moved to a causeway across the bay in the 1960s. The Crown gifted the park to the council in 1994. The lagoon covers 5 hectares; the full park covers 7 hectares.

On siteThe splash pad at Aotea Lagoon features toddler-friendly water jellies and misters alongside spray cannons and a massive 'supersplash' dumper bucket for older children. A family zone offers water jets and a watery rainforest experience. The pad runs on 10,000 litres of recirculated, chlorinated water activated by a push button for a 3-minute cycle. It operates 9am to dusk, free of charge.

AmenitiesThe northern end of Aotea Lagoon is the dedicated play zone, featuring a fort-style playground with equipment for all ages from toddlers to tweens, a free splash pad with water jellies, misters, spray cannons and a 'supersplash' dumper bucket, a pump track opened late 2023 (funded by Waka Kotahi's Transport Choices programme), BBQ and picnic tables, and a miniature train that runs on Sunday afternoons weather permitting. The splash pad is free to use and operates 9am to dusk daily.

Nice peaceful walk. Short walk for large dogs maybe longer walk for small dogs. Large green space to throw a ball. Wooded walk in parts.

A tranquil place to go for a walk with ducks and birds in the area. There is an ecosystem here that is pleasant and calming. Dogs go for walks here. Highly recommended for a walk or a run through. Very spacious area to move around in.

It's a spacious green field with a stream around it and a pond with eels, some above water walkways. It's worth a quick visit perhaps for a picnic on a dry day.
