Poets Park

Poets Park in Upper Hutt is a large riverside reserve that doubles as a key staging point on the Rimutaka Cycle Trail, giving it an unusual energy: mountain bikers clicking into pedals, dog walkers following the Hutt River, and children making straight for the playground.

The park runs alongside the Hutt River in the heart of Upper Hutt, spreading across wide lawns backed by river willows and open sky. The Rimutaka Cycle Trail passes directly through the reserve on its way north from Petone toward the Rimutaka Summit, so the park shares its space with recreational cyclists at most times of day. Poets Park is centrally located in Upper Hutt, reachable by car with on-site parking. Upper Hutt train station is close by, and the park connects directly to the Rimutaka Cycle Trail network, making it easily accessible by bike from much of the Hutt Valley.

A bit of history

The park's name reflects Upper Hutt's tradition of naming reserves and streets after literary figures, a theme carried through several older neighbourhoods of the city. The reserve's role as a trail corridor came into sharper focus as the Rimutaka Cycle Trail was developed and formalised, linking it to a regional network used by tens of thousands of riders each year.
