Raumanga Scenic Reserve Playground

Raumanga Scenic Reserve Playground sits on the floor of Raumanga Valley in Whangārei, a short drive from the city centre and within reach of the trail to the 15 metre Raumanga Falls, with a December 2024 inclusive upgrade that makes it one of the most intentionally accessible community playgrounds in Northland.

Equipment

A multi level timber fortress connected by ramps, bridges, and a climbing net anchors the site, accompanied by slides and a basket swing for younger children. A separate accessible zone on stable rubber surfacing has a wheelchair compatible seesaw, a merry go round, and a wheelchair accessible swing, letting children who use wheelchairs play alongside able bodied peers on equal terms. A half basketball court sits nearby for older children and teenagers.

History and Cultural

The 2024 upgrade was delivered through a partnership between Whangārei District Council and local charity Children with Disabilities NZ, founded by Kylee Ostermann. The playground was a finalist in the 2025 Recreation Aotearoa Playspace of the Year category at the Parks Awards.

Practical Info

Toilets and a drinking fountain were added as part of the 2024 development, with street parking off Raumanga Valley Road and picnic tables alongside the play area. The Raumanga Shared Path, a three kilometre cycling and walking route, connects back into central Whangārei for families arriving by bike.
