St James Park Playground

St James Park playground sits under a canopy of mature trees in Papanui, Christchurch, and that canopy defines the whole feel of the reserve: dappled shade in summer, a carpet of fallen leaves in autumn, and the settled park air that older Christchurch reserves build up over decades. It suits ages two to eight best, with a multi-play structure, swings and a see-saw scaled for preschool and early primary years.

Equipment

The playground centres on a multi-play structure with slide, swings including an infant seat, and a see-saw, sitting on a Matta Tiles surface. A basket swing and a separate infant swing broaden the appeal for the youngest visitors. Open grassed areas around the play zone give children room to run and kick a ball under the trees lining the walkways, and a path through the reserve works well for small bikes and scooters.

Access and inclusion

The infant swing and basket swing serve younger families well. The reserve is unfenced and opens onto the surrounding streets, so parents of very young walkers should keep an eye at the park edges. On street parking is available on the surrounding streets.

Practical info

Public toilets are on site. A croquet club holds regular sessions in the reserve, and shared soccer and cricket fields extend the back of the park. A generous off leash dog area makes the reserve consistently popular with dog walkers alongside families, and Northlands Shopping Centre is a short drive away for a post play stop.
